Mark Dyczkowski, a renowned Shaivite practitioner and scholar, will lead this workshop in which he will teach several beautiful and powerful meditation practices translated from the Tantraloka, written by the Kasmiri saint, Abhinavagupta. On the final evening, Thursday, Mark will be joined by Swami Khecaranatha, who will co-teach the session.

Abhinavagupta expounds three major categories of spiritual means (upayas) to realization in his Tantrāloka. These were taught to him by Śambhunātha his teacher of Trika Śaivism. This workshop will explore those upayas.

Abhinavagupta dedicates a chapter to each one of these topic:

  • The highest means is the basis of all the others. Practicing in this way, Śiva is realised directly by participating in the pure reflective awareness He has of His own nature. Accordingly, it is called Śāmbhavopāya – Śiva’s Means to Realisation.
  • The next is the Empowered Means – Śāktopāya, which is based on Śiva’s Divine Power. This involves the purification of thought constructs.
  • The third one is called the Individual Means – Ānavopāya - because the practices in this Means are centered on the vital breath, mind, subtle and physical body of the individual soul. Abhinavagupta expounds this category of practice in chapter five of his Tantrāloka. There we find several beautiful and power practices which we will learn to do directly from the Tantrāloka in this workshop.

Mark Dyczkowski first went to India to find a spiritual teacher in 1969. After receiving initiation he returned to England to study at Oxford. He returned to India in 1975 and has lived there ever since. Mark has written half a dozen books on Tantra and Kashmiri Shaivism. He has also studied, practiced and performed North Indian classical music on sitar in dozens of countries, including India.

Swami Khecaranatha lives and teaches full time in Berkeley. With a mastery etched from 39 years of disciplined inner practice and selfless service, he is an authentic master of Tantrik Shaivism in the Shaktipat Lineage of Bhagavan Nityananda and Swami Rudrananda.
